A meeting between President of Turkmenistan and Prime Minister of the Russian Federation

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, who had arrived in Ashgabat on a visit and participated in the meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Independent States, held the talks in Ashgabat.

During the talks emphasis was placed on the positive trend in the bilateral trade between the two countries, which had made over US$ 5 billion in recent years.

It was noted that the Intergovernmental Turkmenistan-Russia Commission and the national business councils under the Chambers of Commerce and Industry contributed to boosting the bilateral trade.

The Prime Minister of the Russian Federation focused on the opportunities for diversifying Russian-Turkmen trade and economic relations given new approaches and modern realities. Good prospects for partnership exist in agriculture, including in the supply of food products to the Russian market. Noting also that Turkmenistan is a major exporter of the goods of Russia's automobile industry, the head of the Russian Government expressed belief that the sides would continue to fruitfully cooperation.


The issues relating to investment cooperation, the development of agricultural industry and the prospects for fostering a dialogue in the field of science, technology, education, sports and culture were discussed.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted with satisfaction that Turkmen young people studied at a number of universities in Russia, acquiring specialities which are in high demand in Turkmen economy. The establishment of more active partnership in the field of science is deemed to be important. In this context, the Turkmen leader focused on the response that the discovery of the building complex, the age of which is 7,000 years, made by the Turkmen-Russian archaeological expedition in Yylgynly Depe had drawn worldwide.

Attention was paid to cooperation in ensuring global energy security and building its legal framework, optimizing traffic flows in Eurasia and addressing environmental issues.

The Prime Minister of the Russian Federation expressed his sincere approval of the policy of constructive international cooperation and progressive initiatives of Turkmenistan and assured the Turkmen leader that he would promote their implementation. Emphasis was also placed on the important role of cooperation within the CIS.

Upon concluding the meeting, the Turkmen leader and the Prime Minister of Russia expressed their firm belief that it would give a new impetus to further fruitful Turkmen-Russian relations.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and RF Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev visited the Ahalteke Horse Breeding Complex, where they rode horses. In conclusion, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev warmly bade farewell to each other and exchanged the wishes for the wellbeing and prosperity to the friendly peoples of Turkmenistan and Russia.
