Addressing the Turkmen people, the President noted that Turkmenistan pursues the policy based on the principles of peace and stability, sustainable economic development, improvement of the people’s welfare and enhancement of international cooperation in compliance with its status of neutrality. In this regard, the leader of Turkmenistan said that our country continuously emphasizes the importance of environmentally sustainable, safe and generally accessible transport and transit corridors. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that the High-Level Conference on the Role of Transport and Transit Corridors in Ensuring International Cooperation, Stability and Sustainable Development, held at the initiative of the Turkmen state in Ashgabat in September this year, had resulted in adopting the Ashgabat Declaration.
The participants in the Conference stressed that it had profoundly contributed to enhancing mutually beneficial international cooperation in the transport sector. The President said that the ideas put forward by the Turkmen side met with broad support not only from the forum participants, but also from the world community, emphasizing that the Ashgabat Declaration was discussed among other issues at the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly and the ad-hoc document on international transport and transit issues was drafted on the proposal of Turkmenistan.
President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted with satisfaction that the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Resolution on the Role of Transport and Transit Corridors in Ensuring International Cooperation, Stability and Sustainable Development on December 19. Focusing on the importance of this document, the Turkmen leader noted that the Resolution calls on Member States of the United Nations, international and regional organisations to enhance cooperation between the parties involved in creating and operating international transport corridors as well as lays the groundwork for the development of transport networks that comprise road, rail, sea and air routes.
The Turkmen leader noted that this document reflects the key provisions of the Ashgabat Declaration adopted in September 2014, which aims at elaborating an integrated approach to building transport and transit networks. The President said that the Resolution involves mobilization of financial and technical resources of international monetary and financial institutions and recommends that the relevant bodies and Member States of the United Nations should contribute to the preparations for the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will be held in 2015 and report on the ways to enhance international cooperation in this sector.
Noting that the Resolution is a logical continuation of the tremendous work that our country has been carrying out for the last years, facilitating the development of international transport and transit corridors, the President expressed his gratitude to the leadership of the United Nations for supporting the initiative of Turkmenistan, and Members States for co-sponsoring the document. The Turkmen leader said that Turkmenistan viewed the adoption of the Resolution as another step towards creating an international legal framework to further develop transport networks that comprise road, rail, sea and air routes through intermodal logistics centres and dry ports, which will promote economic growth on regional and international scale.
The Turkmen leader noted that the facilitation of freight traffic and the smooth functioning of international transport and transit corridors was a key factor in promoting sustainable economic development on global scale today. The Turkmen leader noted that it played a major role in promoting trade as a crucial element in enhancing cooperation between countries, which was particularly relevant in the context of ongoing global financial and economic crisis.
President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that interregional transport corridors, promoting international partnership and trade, were to contribute to strengthening global security as well. Noting that the Resolution on the Role of Transport and Transit Corridors in Ensuring International Cooperation, Stability and Sustainable Development initiated by our country and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly was a critical step the international community had taken in this direction, the Turkmen leader stated that it would give an impetus to move forward. The Turkmen leader said that Turkmenistan would continue to play an active role in supporting and promoting the ideas of the United Nations to strengthen peace and political stability, sustainable economic growth as well as boost international cooperation for the benefit of all peoples of the world.
