Talks between President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President Hassan Rouhani

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani, who arrived in our country on a state visit, held talks at the Oguzhan palace complex in Ashgabat.

The one-on-one talks were held in the Hall of Bilateral Meetings, and the talks between the official delegations of the two countries took place in Sultan Sanjar Hall.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that Turkmenistan and Iran shared stances on the key issues of our time, such as peace, security and sustainable development. Dwelling upon the Caspian Sea related issues, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that Turkmenistan and Iran had been cooperating fruitfully for over 20 years to make the Caspian Sea the sea of peace and good neighbourliness. An illustrative example of the major international projects is Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway designed to be an important link of the North-South transnational corridor, which was put into operation last year. The President of Turkmenistan also emphasized the need to broaden the range of activities of Turkmenistan-Iran Commission on economic cooperation.

President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani expressed belief that the outcomes of the meeting in Ashgabat would benefit the two peoples. In 2014, trade turnover between our countries totalled US$ 3.7 billion; today we have expressed the intention to increase it to US$ 60 billion within the next ten years. Emphasis was placed on the projects in the oil and gas industry. President Hassan Rouhani went on to emphasize that Iran was interested in cooperation in the energy sector, including electricity exports from Turkmenistan. It was agreed to increase rail transport of goods between the two countries up to 10 million tons per year. President Hassan Rouhani noted that the priority areas of Turkmen-Iranian cooperation also included cooperation in improving the legal framework to address the Caspian Sea related issues.

The ceremony of signing bilateral documents took place Seljuk Han Hall.


The Protocol on Extradition of Persons Sentenced to Imprisonment for Serving under the Agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Programme of Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran for 2015-2020, the Memorandum of Understanding on Environmental Cooperation between the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan and the Department of Environment of the Islamic Republic of Iran , the Programme of Cooperation in the Fields of Culture, Art, Science and Education between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran for 2015-2018, the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Exchange of Information about Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing between the Ministry of Finance of Turkmenistan and the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Finance of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Memorandum of Understanding on the construction of a highway bridge at the Serahs-Serahs checkpoint between Turkmenawtoyollary State Concern and the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran were signed.

The intergovernmental memoranda of understanding on cooperation in the road building sector, the electricity sector, the supply of goods and products for the chemical industry, the supply of goods and products for the agricultural sector, the supply of goods and products for the railway sector and the assistance for enterprises and companies of the private sector of Turkmenistan in the supply of goods and products were signed.

The Agreement on Cooperation in the field of ancient manuscripts, documents and research between the National Institute of Manuscripts of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan and the International Centre for Education and Research of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Agreement on Cooperation between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan and the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines of the Islamic Republic of Iran were signed. The memoranda of understanding on trade and economic, scientific and technical and cultural cooperation between the regions of Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran were signed.

The Joint Communique on the outcomes of the state visit of President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani to Turkmenistan was signed.

The leaders of the two countries gave a press conference in Magtymguly Hall after the signing ceremony had concluded.

Commenting on the outcomes of the talks, the President of Turkmenistan said that they were constructive and fruitful. The package of bilateral documents aimed at strengthening interstate relations and promoting bilateral cooperation were signed in the framework of the top-level talks.

The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran said that a wide range of issues of interstate cooperation as well as certain aspects of regional and international politics of mutual interest had been discussed. In particular, the possibilities to triple rail transport of goods and double road transport of goods had been discussed.

In the afternoon, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran laid a wreath at the Monument of Independence of Turkmenistan. The Iranian leader planted a young tree on the Alley of Guests of Honour in the Independence Park as a symbol of unbreakable friendship between the two states and nations.

Then the motorcade of the Iranian leader headed to the Mizan Business Centre, where together with the President of Turkmenistan, he attended Turkmenistan-Iran Business Forum.

The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran visited Gypjak, where he paid tribute to the first President of Turkmenistan, laid flowers at the Mausoleum and visited the Mosque of Spirituality. In the evening, the President of Turkmenistan gave an official reception in honour of the leader of Iran.

After the official reception had concluded, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani headed to Ashgabat International Airport and left for Tehran.
