An official ceremony on occasion of a new edition of the ancient Turkmen epic Kitaby dädem Gorkut. took place at the National Institute of Manuscripts at the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.
The presentation of the new edition was dedicated to the remarkable date in the history of the legendary epic. 200 years ago, the decrepit manuscripts of destan Kitaby dädem Gorkut – the book which was included in the golden fund of the world culture and became known to the Turkmen people as Gorkut ata – were found in the depository of ancient manuscripts in Dresden. The wonderful destan that has been arousing the keen interest among the international science community over many centuries and which was translated into dozens of languages of the world tells about the lifestyle of ancient Oguz Turkmen, their culture, customs, traditions and spiritual legacy.
The new edition of the ancient epic was prepared for publication by specialists of the National Institute of Manuscripts at the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan based on the manuscripts found in Dresden. The new book was published by the Turkmen State Publishing Service in the new Printing Centre using state-of-the-art technology and equipment in accordance with high European standards,
The publication of the new edition is of profound cultural and historical significance because of the fact that Mary, the administrative centre of Mary Velayat and the homeland of Gorkut ata, was declared the capital of the Turkic world in 2015 by the Permanent Council of the International Organization of Turkic Culture (TURKSOY).
Those speaking during the ceremony noted that orientalists, including experts studying the culture of Turkmen people, their national heritage, language and history, had been conducting research on the epic Gorkut ata – the magnificent literary monument of the Turkmen people – during the past two centuries.
