The opening ceremony of the cultural memorial complex and Magtymguly Fraghi museum took place in the administrative centre of Magtymguly Etrap in Balkan Velayat.

The Chairperson of Mejlis, cabinet ministers, cultural and art workers, specialists of a number of ministries and departments, the Balkan Velayat and Magtymguly Etrap Hyakimlik, public organisations, the Academy of Sciences and museums, scientists, journalists, the elders and young citizens participated in the cultural action.

The sculpture composition that stands in front of the museum building represents some kind of poetical flow. The sculptural image of Magtymguly who holds a scroll of poems in his hands is in the heart of the composition. He seems to hover above the ground, symbolizing the flight of creative thought of the poet who conveyed universal ideals and imperishable values and called on people to make the world better in his poems. The sculptures of the prominent Turkmen poets, whose literary legacy is the priceless national treasure, stand on both sides of the monument to Magtymguly Fraghi.

Each of the sculptures embodies the characteristic features of the images, depicting the specifics of their creative activities and work. A poet warrior Magrupi is standing together with a magnificent Ahalteke horse, and a satirical poet Kemine is setting out on a long journey. An unsurpassed lyric poet Mollanepes is depicted at the time of his poetic development. The sculpture of a singer of love and beauty Myataji and the inseparable friends Zelili and Seidi stand on the other side. From sculpture to sculpture, it seems that we are turning the pages of poetic chronicle that takes us away to ancient times.

An excursus to the history continued at the new museum building. The two-storey building that covers a total area of 5,393 square metres houses five permanent exhibit halls, where the conditions conducive to the storage, study and display of unique artefacts are created, the 300-seat conference room, the library and the administrative offices.

The Garashsyzlyk Hall, the Hall dedicated to the literary heritage of Magtymguly Fraghi and the Tebigat Hall dedicated to the nature of the poet’s homeland are located on the first floor of the museum building.

The exhibition gives visitors an opportunity to learn about an objective cultural and intellectual environment that nurtured Magtymguly, think over his creative work in the historical and biographical, cultural and ethnographic context and make sure of his special role in the development of national culture and its establishment in global cultural and humanitarian processes.

The exposition features the works by Magtymguly, his predecessors and successors – the classics of Turkmen literature who considered themselves the disciples of Magtymguly Fraghi – published in different languages in different centuries. The bizarre Arabic lettering, the Latin script and the Slavic Cyrillic characters are printed on the pages that turned yellow over time. The books of the venerable age make visitors thrill with reverence.

The exhibits include the postage stamps, commemorative coins, calendars, records of theatrical productions, musical compositions and songs based on his poetry, documentaries and feature films about the creative legacy of the genius of Turkmen poetry and other things dedicated to Magtymguly.

The new museum building is equipped with advanced technologies. The monitors are installed in all the exhibit halls to demonstrate thematic films. Interactive and multimedia technologies help diversify the forms that the information is conveyed in and facilitate the perception of it.

The hall dedicated to the nature of Balkan Velayat that gave inspiration to Magtymguly who conveyed it in the wonderful poetic images is harmoniously incorporated in the museum exposition.

The Archaeology Hall, located on the second floor of the museum building, features the unique archaeological finds discovered on the territory of the region, where scientists have recorded more than a hundred archaeological sites of different epochs.

The Hall of Ethnography is one of the largest exhibit halls.

It features musical instruments, ancient tools, household items, women’s jewellery, carpets and ancient national costumes. Visitors can see a ceramic workshop, weaving tools and many other priceless artefacts that serve as an important source for the studies on the history and culture of the western region of the country.

The participants gathered together in the conference hall of the new museum building, where the ceremony of awarding high state awards and anniversary insignias, issued in honour of the 290th birth anniversary of the Turkmen classical poet Magtymguly, to cultural workers, artists, scientists, education specialists, writers, and poets took place.
