At the initiative of Turkmenistan, 2021 was declared by the United Nations as the Year of Peace and Confidence. In his address to the General Assembly, in connection with the swearing-in for a second term, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the importance of trust in addressing the challenges facing humanity.

As A. Guterres said: “In a world that has changed so much, the promises, principles and values of the UN Charter are preserved. But we also need to work together in completely new ways to deliver on our promises. ”

The solution of the "colossal tasks" facing the world community will become possible only if "the current deficit of trust, which has a devastating effect on societies and between countries, is overcome. In particular, we need to do everything possible to overcome the current geostrategic differences and dysfunctional relations of forces, ”said Antonio Guterres.

Recalling the words of Sophocles that trust dies, but mistrust blooms, the UN Secretary General said: “We have the power to change this idea, reviving trust and fighting mistrust. What we are experiencing today in terms of mistrust is, I hope, a delusion, but it cannot become the norm. " The norm is and will remain the foundation upon which the Charter of the United Nations was built - absolute belief in the multilateralism and aspirations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Referring to his own role and objectives, Antonio Guterres said: “I will do my best to ensure the growth of trust between large and small countries, build bridges and participate tirelessly in building trust. I will also strive to inspire hope that we can radically change the situation, that the impossible can become possible. "

Neutral Turkmenistan, as a strategic partner of the UN in building peace and confidence, supports the actions of the Secretary General in this area. In the message of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov sent to Antonio Guterres in connection with his re-election for a second term, it is emphasized that Turkmenistan attaches great importance to the established relations with the UN, which is an effective and leading international body in resolving global issues, ensuring world order and developing cooperation between states.

The President of Turkmenistan expressed confidence that with the re-election to the post of UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres will continue to contribute to improving the efficiency of this structure, strengthening its role in solving key challenges of our time, as well as further strengthening the comprehensive interaction between Turkmenistan and the United Nations.
