As reported by RIA Novosti, Prosecutors General of Russia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan signed the declaration on environmental protection and the use of natural resources of the Caspian Sea in St. Petersburg.

This is the first interstate document on this topic.

According to General Prosecutor of Russia Igor Krasnov, the Caspian Sea is of great strategic importance for all five states. It links the territories of the Caspian littoral states into a single ecological system. Joint environmental protection activities will positively influence the system. The declaration will lay the foundation for further cooperation in the Caspian Sea in five-sided format. According to the General Prosecutor of Russia, the declaration focuses on “the primary nature of preventive measures aimed at protecting the Caspian Sea”.

I. Krasnov notes that there are more than enough problems, including oil production and negative consequences of oil extraction, emissions of toxic industrial waste, illegal construction on the coastal strip. Therefore, it was proposed to hold an expert-level meeting in early 2022 within the framework of the provisions of the declaration.

The Prosecutor General underlined that well-coordinated joint work on counteracting violations of the law in the Caspian Sea region would be of benefit to the citizens of five countries "and humanity in general". The declaration on the protection of the environment and the use of natural resources of the Caspian Sea was signed by Prosecutor General of Russia Igor Krasnov, Prosecutor General of Turkmenistan Batyr Atdaev, Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan Kamran Aliyev, Prosecutor General of Iran Mohammad Jafar

Montazeri and Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan Gizat Nurdauletov.
