Exhibition of video installations by European artists opens in Ashgabat

Within the framework of the Week of Culture of the European Union, held these days in the capital of Turkmenistan, an exhibition of video installations by artists representing France, Germany and Italy was opened in the gallery of the State Academy of Arts.

The fact that something unusual awaits the guests of the event could be guessed already from the threshold of the exhibition hall. Authentic darkness reigned in the space, and intricate plots and moving images appeared on the white walls every now and then.

The exposition of video installations, organized for the first time in Ashgabat, introduced the public to one of the most popular areas of contemporary art, video art.

Artists, or rather, video artists Robert Cahen (France) and Theo Echetou (Germany) are the pioneers of video art. Robert is fond of landscapes, slow motion and experiments with electronic music, adding sound to his images. Theo explores the topic of anthropology and world culture. Video artist Samuele Malfatti (Italy) works in the studio of Teo Echetu and for many years creates video installations based on the impressions he brought from his travels.

Among Samuele's recent vivid impressions is a trip to the Darvaza gas crater. He used the footage filmed on the ground in creating a joint work with students of the State Academy of Arts of Turkmenistan.

For several days, young men and women at video art master classes studied the features of shooting for video art, and also experimented with moving images. Thus, a common creative work was born, which attracted the attention of the guests of the exhibition with its national color and simplicity of execution.

As Samuele Malfatti noted, only in Turkmenistan, having got acquainted with the historical and cultural heritage of our country, he first looked at his video work from the point of view of the design of wall carpets.

The exposition, organized by the French Institute with the support of the embassies of Germany and France in partnership with the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan in the exhibition hall of the Academy of Arts, will last until October 31.

In addition, on October 28, the Nadar Gallery of the French Institute will host the opening of the Video Art exhibition. Entrance is free for everyone.
