The State Museum of Visual Arts hosts the exhibition of furniture samples and other articles for interior of western European and Russian cultures of XVIII – XIX centuries. One of the halls of the museum is furnished in the style of fashion tendencies of that time. The exhibition rose great interest not only of the personnel of diplomatic corps but also of various visitors of the museum.

The sofa made by Russian masters of the XVIII century occupies central place of the exposition. Massive with dark red velvet upholstery and armrests varnished in black – this is type of furniture that was used by high society. As is known, Pavel I banned the import of the furniture from France and that gave an impulse to the development of furniture manufacturing in Russia. There is a picture of Empress Maria Fyodorovna, the wife of Alexander III, above the sofa.

Another exhibit, place above the sofa is a segment of cupboard made by the masters of Gambs Brothers Sankt Petersburg Furniture Factory. Unfortunately, the cupboard was destroyed during Ashgabat earthquake in 1948 and only the doors remained. But they are so beautiful that are included in museum rarities. There are impressive inlay (the marquetry) of the group of playing angels on skilfully polished light-coloured wood.

Cabinet furniture section includes the bureau for letters and documents with cylindrical cover that can be locked and incrusted with bronze ornate plates. The bureau is dated by 1750 and made of precious woods with stylish replica decoration of French painter Boucher.

Another unique exhibit is a whatnot covered by black lacquer made in English style of the end of XVIII century. It is remarkable that the paintings encircle all sides of the article and cover interior shelves.

The interior of living quarter is supplemented by the armchair and chair with high backrest with bended legs decorated by carvings and velvet upholstery. Supposedly, these items were made by Brother Gambs factory.

There are also several paint works of landscape painting - “The Castle in Glauberk Johannes Park” by Stern and “The Coach at the Door” by Reinhardt Johan Chrisitian, along with the portray of the empress Maria Fyodorovna.

Unique three-leaved folding screen by unknown author, supposedly, western European, related to the XVIII century, supplemented the exposition of the interior of the pat centuries. The screen made of leather and decorated by the painting on travelling.

Another interesting item of the exhibition is a decorative stone fire screen made in the tapestry style with flower motifs, which were widely spread in England in the XVIII century.

The visitors of the exhibition, having found themselves in the interior of past centuries, involuntarily ask the question – how did these exhibits of applied art get to the State Museum of Visual Arts. The hosts of the exhibition explained that in 20s of the last century, Russian museums such as the Hermitage, Russian Museum, Pushkin Museum, Tretyakov Gallery handed over various precious exhibits to central Asian museums for introduction of the culture of other peoples and ages to local population. For many years, the exhibits were kept in storerooms of the museum awaiting for the occasion to be displayed for the visitors. Celebration of the day of Diplomats of Turkmenistan was a good opportunity for this.
