On 22 February 2024, within the framework of the 86th High-Level Session of the Inland Transport Committee (ITC) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), at the initiative of the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN Office at Geneva, a side event on "Towards Sustainable Transport: Best Practices, Challenges and Solutions" was organised jointly with the UNECE. About 70 representatives from more than 40 countries and international organizations, both at the level of heads of diplomatic missions and international experts, took part in the side event.

The participants - high-ranking officials and experts in the field of transport highly appreciated the leading role of Turkmenistan in promoting international cooperation in such an important segment of sustainable development as transport and the initiatives of the President of Turkmenistan to create favorable international conditions in the transport sector.

Representatives of the transport sector from various countries and international organizations exchanged views on the importance of the role of transport in ensuring smooth trade, economic growth and employment, the need to mitigate the effects of climate change and adapt transport chains to them.

At the event were also presented recommendations and opportunities for increasing the efficiency of development of the sustainable transport sector, strengthening cooperation in the field of environmentally friendly and sustainable transport communications, as well as the transition to the introduction and use of modern environmental, clean and resource-saving technologies in the international transport system.
