The Institute of State, Law and Democracy of Turkmenistan, together with the Representative Office in Turkmenistan of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), held a seminar on the 30th of April to 1st of May, 2024 to review the implementation at the national level of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women.

The meeting was attended by representatives of ministries, state and public organizations included in the working group of the Interdepartmental Commission to ensure the implementation of Turkmenistan’s international obligations in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law.

Earlier, at the end of March, the partners held a working meeting with representatives of public organizations in the country to discuss issues of gender equality, collect additional information for the Comprehensive Review at the national level and assess the progress made in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. These events, which brought together a wide range of participants, including representatives of the Institute of State, Law and Democracy of Turkmenistan, public organizations involved in gender equality, protection of women's rights and opportunities, allowed for a comprehensive and inclusive dialogue on gender equality in Turkmenistan in preparation for the thirtieth anniversary The Fourth World Conference on Women, which will be celebrated in 2025.

The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted in 1995 at the Fourth World Conference on Women, is a foundational document aimed at achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women in all spheres of life. The purpose of these documents is to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and increase the role of women in the decision-making process. The Platform for Action identifies 12 main areas of work to achieve gender equality, such as poverty, education, health, violence, economic participation, decision-making and others. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted by 189 countries, remains the most comprehensive plan to advance gender equality worldwide.
