The British Embassy in Turkmenistan organized a gala evening dedicated to the National Day of Scotland – the birthday of the outstanding poet and folklorist Robert Burns. The event was attended by representatives of state agencies of Turkmenistan, members of international organizations and diplomats.

In his welcoming address, British Ambassador to Turkmenistan Stephen Conlon noted that the great Turkmen poet Magtymguly Fragi played a vital role in shaping the identity of the Turkmen people, and his legacy continues to inspire many generations. Similarly, Robert Burns had a significant influence on Scottish culture and is a significant figure not only in Scotland but also beyond its borders.

Deputy Minister of Culture of Turkmenistan Nursahat Shirimov also emphasized that constructive cooperation in the political-diplomatic, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian spheres is actively developing between Turkmenistan and Great Britain. He added that the participation of creative groups in international events contributes to the strengthening of cultural ties and mutual understanding between nations.

In May 2024, London hosted events dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the birth of Magtymguly Fragi. In addition to this, in the magazine «Dünýä edebiýaty» the publication of Robert Burns' poems translated into Turkmen is planned. These initiatives create an opportunity to express mutual respect between poets of the two countries, emphasizing the importance of literary exchange and cooperation.

The gala evening continued with the reading of Burns's poems, the performance of Scottish "Ceilidh" dances and the serving of traditional treats, including the national Scottish dish, "Haggis".

Being a great master of Scottish traditions, Robert Burns dedicated an entire ode to this dish, praising it as a symbol of national culture and the embodiment of the Scottish spirit. In his poems, "Haggis" is presented not only as a simple meal, but as a true art that can unite people and create a festive atmosphere.

The British Embassy in Turkmenistan actively develops cultural ties between the two countries, organizing events aimed at familiarizing the Turkmen people with the cultural heritage of Great Britain. The celebration of Robert Burns's birthday was another step in this direction.
