Potential of topinambur for producing valuable products

Within the framework of the State Program for the Comprehensive Development of Biotechnology for 2024-2028, scientific specialists are developing new technologies aimed at utilizing the potential of topinambur (earth pear) to produce valuable products.

The International Scientific-Technological Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan is conducting research to create pharmaceutical-grade inulin, resveratrol, and a glucose-fructose syrup composition derived from topinambur.

A significant achievement is that the State Service for Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan has already registered copyright for the technology to produce pharmaceutical inulin, resveratrol, and glucose-fructose syrup from topinambur.

The main goal of the research is to fully unlock the potential of topinambur for its application in various industries, especially in the creation of functional food products.

Inulin, the key component of topinambur, is known as a powerful prebiotic. It effectively improves intestinal microflora, supports immune system strengthening, and normalizes metabolism. Additionally, inulin serves as the basis for producing fructose-glucose syrup—a natural sugar substitute particularly important for people with diabetes.

The developed syrups, available in both dry and liquid forms, have a wide range of applications. They can be used in the food, pharmaceutical, and agro-industrial sectors. This includes the confectionery, bakery, and canning industries, beverage and feed production, and they can also be marketed as standalone products.

The innovation development is led by Altyn Rakhmanova, head of the Biotechnology Laboratory.
