The labor of carpet weavers – a jewel of our era

Thanks to the broad opportunities created in our country by Hero-Arkadag and Arkadagly Hero Serdar, the art of carpet weaving — one of the outstanding examples of our national heritage — is experiencing a new flourishing.

Today, the magnificent carpets woven by skilled craftswomen, who proudly carry on the traditions passed down from our grandmothers, are especially renowned around the world. The decision to include “Traditional Turkmen Carpet Making Art in Turkmenistan” in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, made during the 14th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a testament to the high global recognition of our national heritage, as well as to the centuries of dedicated labor by our master carpet weavers.

The art of carpet weaving is widely practiced in Lebap velayat, as it is in all regions of our country. The carpets woven in this eastern region — featuring gyols such as “Gyzylaýak”, “Beşir”, and “Ärsary” — are distinguished by the density of their knots, color patterns, and their unique reflection of the natural features of Lebap velayat. This can be clearly seen in the carpets produced at the Halach Artistic Carpet Weaving Enterprise of the State Association “Türkmenhaly.” It is heartening to witness the vibrant creative work taking place at one of the largest carpet weaving facilities. In the first nine months of this year, the enterprise’s skilled craftswomen wove over 3,000 square meters of carpets, achieving a growth rate of 144 percent compared to the same period last year. It should also be noted that research work is constantly conducted at this enterprise.

Alongside ancient examples of carpet weaving — which reflect the spirit of the nation, the melody of the Turkmen woman’s soul, and the magnificent Turkmen nature — new designs are being created that showcase the radiant image of our Homeland.

A vivid confirmation of this is the fact that, in addition to standard-sized carpets, the enterprise also produces large carpets with new gyol designs, as well as round and trapezoid-shaped carpets tailored to specific room dimensions. Furthermore, the enterprise weaves horjuns, women’s handbags, decorative home carpets, and various souvenir rugs and carpet products that are offered to customers.
