The elections to Gengesh and National Parliament took place in Turkmenistan on a wide alternative basis in accordance with the current law and international standards. The elections were held in accordance with the current law and in line with the special Resolutions of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.
The large-scale preparatory work anticipated the elections. In particular, 12,309 candidates nominated by leading public organizations and associations, as well as groups of citizens were registered for Gengesh members. 6,100 constituencies and 1,779 polling stations were established in cities in etraps, settlements and gengeshliks.
The process of nominating candidates for the election took place in an atmosphere of transparency and openness. Citizens of all the regions demonstrated keen interest and actively participate in the electoral campaign showing their readiness to strengthen and promote the democratic principles. Several candidates were nominated in each constituency to one place that satisfies the principles of alternative elections. Only the worthiest people who have won the regard and confidence of their compatriots contended for the right to be a Gengesh member who represents the people's interests in cities in etraps, settlements and gengeshliks as well as to represent their , towns and gengeshliks and represent a constituency in the National Parliament. Among the candidates are agricultural workers, representatives of government agencies, leading experts in various industries, workers in the spheres of education, science, culture, health, as well as active members of public organisations and unions.
According to the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan, all polling stations were opened in due time in all constituencies. Of them, 359 in Ahal Velayat, 151 - in Balkan Velayat, 399 - in Dashoguz Velayat, 404 - in Lebap Velayat, 466 - in Mary Velayat. In general, the district electoral committees registered 2,185,502 voters entitled to vote at the elections to Gengesh.
43,859 voters were registered for the elections to the Mejlis of Turkmenistan in two constituencies – No. 26 in Kaahka Etrap, Ahal Velayat and No. 99 in Mary, Mary Velayat.
National observers who visited all polling stations monitored the electoral process. According to their assessment, the elections of Gengesh members and deputies of the National Parliament were held on an alternative basis in accordance with the current law and international standards.
According to the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan, by the time the polls closed, that is, by 7 pm, 89.91 percent of voters took part in the elections of Gengesh members, and 90.01 percent of voters participated in the elections of national parliamentarians.
According to the data provided by the Central Election Commission the elections of Gengesh members and deputies of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan in two constituencies can be considered valid. In accordance with the provisions of the national law the voting results will be announced in the near future.
