Talks between leaders of Turkmenistan and the Republic of Hungary
The ceremony of signing bilateral documents took place at the Oguzkhan palace complex after the Turkmen-Hungarian inter-governmental talks were concluded. The ceremony took place in presence of the President of Turkmenistan and the President of the Republic of Hungary.
These included the Joint Declaration of Turkmenistan and the Republic of Hungary; the Agreement on Cooperation between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Hungary; the Protocol concerning Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Hungary.
Then the President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President Pal Schmitt gave a press conference for Turkmen and foreign journalists in the Bayram Khan Hall.
Addressing the press conference, the President of Turkmenistan expressed sincere gratitude to his counterpart President Pal Schmitt for the productive talks held in an atmosphere of mutual confidence and understanding inherent in Turkmen-Hungarian relations.
The Turkmen leader noted that the agenda of the top level talks focused on the current state and prospects of bilateral cooperation, international political issues of mutual interest and the specific options for collaboration between Turkmenistan and Hungary.
President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said the similarity or coincidence of views of Turkmenistan and Hungary on many international issues was another important factor for further effective cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Hungary.
The Turkmen leader noted that Turkmenistan highly appreciated the level of mutual confidence and understanding with the friendly country. Cooperation between the two states has a great future, said President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noting that the sides had agreed to work further towards the implementation of the tremendous potential of collaboration in the political, trade and economic, cultural, scientific and education and other sectors.
Touching upon bilateral economic cooperation, the Turkmen leader said the two countries had the profound potential for partnership in this sector and stood ready to use their possibilities more effectively. “We have identified the development and expansion of cooperation in the trade, fuel and energy, transport and communications and textile sectors as priority areas of Turkmen-Hungarian economic relations,” said President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
Dwelling upon the issues of international cooperation, the leader of Turkmenistan focused with satisfaction that the two states shared views on a number of international political issues, particularly on the effectiveness of bilateral collaboration in addressing global development challenge. The examples provided included Hungary’s support for Turkmenistan’s initiative to ensure stable and reliable energy transit. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said Turkmenistan viewed Hungary as a major partner within the Turkmenistan-European Union dialogue that had been significantly intensified in recent years and was a key vector of the foreign policy strategy of the Turkmen state.
Noting that Turkmenistan and Hungary carried out the national policy based on peacefulness, equality and non-interference in the internal affairs of other states, the Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that the top level talks in Ashgabat had highlighted the commitment of the two countries to these fundamental international rules. “Our states stand ready to expand further bilateral cooperation and collaborate to tackle regional and international issues in the name of progress and wellbeing,” stated President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov wishing the friendly people of Hungary peace, prosperity and new labour achievements.

Congratulating once again the Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and the Turkmen people on the 20th anniversary of independence celebrate this October, the President of Hungary underlined Turkmenistan’s role in addressing urgent regional problems, particularly in maintaining peace and settling the situation in Afghanistan. The international community, said the Hungarian leader, should be grateful to Turkmenistan that demonstrated its commitment to the ideas of humanism, the spirit and the letter of the UN Charter, fundamental norms of international law and actively used its status of neutrality to maintain peace in the region.
Highly evaluating the Turkmen-Hungarian talks in Ashgabat, the Hungarian leader emphasized that this was his first visit to Turkmenistan. We view our visit as a historically important event for it is a starting point for the full-scale interstate dialogue, stated Pal Schmitt describing the interests of Hungary that intentionally opened up its possibilities towards the Central Asian region where Turkmenistan played an active role putting forward initiatives and projects which Hungary was willing to collaborate in.
Dwelling upon the prospects for enhancing trade and economic cooperation, President Pal Schmitt emphasized that given the tremendous potential of the two states it ensured the vast opportunities for mutually advantageous partnership in the fuel and energy, agricultural processing and agricultural sectors, the water industry. The Hungarian leader noted that the government delegation accompanying him in Turkmenistan included top managers of thirty companies and firms who intended to promote business partnership with their counterparts and offered their expertise, know-how and advanced technologies.
Mentioning promotion of cultural and humanitarian cooperation as a major issue on the agenda of the Ashgabat talks, the Hungarian leader stated with satisfaction that the sides had agreed to enhance contacts in the spheres of science, education, culture, sport and tourism. “I congratulated Mr. President on Turkmenistan’s hosting the largest sporting event and wish that these Games will play their role in bringing up a strong and health generation of the Turkmen people,” said Pal Schmitt.
“The interest in Turkmenistan and the region in whole,” said the head of the Republic of Hungary, “evidences Hungary’s intention to open the university for the study of Central Asian states, their language, history, culture, and I am very glad that the leader of Turkmenistan has showed keen interest in this.”

During the meeting the distinguished guest was briefed on the structure and law-making activity of the Mejlis, its international activity and inter-parliamentary contacts.
