The top level talks between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Swiss Confederation Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf will take place in Berne on October 8.

This is the first official visit of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the friendly country. As is known, the Turkmen leader arrived in Zürich on October 7 leading the Government delegation of Turkmenistan.

The programme of the official visit to the Swiss Confederation includes the visit to Geneva, where the Turkmen leader will hold a number of important bilateral meetings with the heads of the UN specialized agencies.

Turkmenistan and Switzerland build their foreign policy given the invariable adherence to the principles of permanent neutrality. Moreover, the both countries adapt their neutrality to the new international conditions actively supporting the political dialogue that doesn’t accept any violent actions and aggression.

Turkmenistan has vividly proved it opening the Headquarters of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, a largest peace-making structure aimed at preventing crisis situations through the modern diplomacy, in Ashgabat.

Officially the bilateral relations between Turkmenistan and the Swiss Confederation date back to May 8, 1992, when the Protocol on establishing the diplomatic relations was signed.

The Embassy of Turkmenistan and the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations Office at Geneva were opened in Switzerland. The Intergovernmental Agreement on Encouragement and Mutual Protection of Investment was signed in 2008.

The frequent visits of the delegations of financial and business circles of Switzerland, including the leaders of the world industry in the sphere of pharmaceutics – Roche Company, in the sphere of road construction – Amman AG and others, to Ashgabat vividly prove the increasing interest of Swiss businessmen in the economic projects of Turkmenistan. Among the priority spheres of cooperation between the two countries are the fuel and energy sector, trading and economic sphere, construction, transport and communications.

The fact that by July 1, 2012, 33 enterprises with participation of Swiss investments have been registered in Turkmenistan, 61 joint projects have been implemented to the total amount of US$ 267.5 million, 4.3 million Swiss francs and 29.7 million Euros, testifies to the mutual interest in the business partnership.
