New chapter in the history of the Turkmen-Swiss relations

The top level talks between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Swiss Confederation Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf took place in Bern.

Exchanging their views on the priority issues of the Turkmen-Swiss cooperation, the leaders of the two countries reaffirmed the invariable adherence of Turkmenistan and Switzerland to the constructive political dialogue noting that the both countries’ commitment to the policy of neutrality served as an important consolidating factor. The President of Turkmenistan and President of the Swiss Confederation emphasized on the favourable opportunities for diversification of mutually beneficial trading and economic relations as well as enhancing fruitful cooperation in the humanitarian and cultural sphere as an important component of the intergovernmental relations.

The leaders of the two states exchanged their views on a number of issues of the international and regional policy that are of particular interest for the both countries.

Then, the talks continued in an expanded format with participation of the members of government delegations of Turkmenistan and the Swiss Confederation.

Underlining the interest of the Swiss Confederation in further strengthening and developing the intergovernmental dialogue in the political, trading, economic and humanitarian spheres, President of the Swiss Confederation Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf expressed belief in that this visit of the President of Turkmenistan to the Swiss Confederation and the talks would make the bilateral relations more efficient.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in his turn also underlined the high level of the political dialogue established between the two states.

Taking an opportunity, the Turkmen leader invited President of the Swiss Confederation Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf to pay an official visit to Turkmenistan at any convenient time.

With the aim to enhance the efficient mechanisms of the trading and economic partnership, the Turkmen leader underlined reasonability of establishing an Intergovernmental Turkmen-Swiss Commission for economic cooperation.

In conclusion of the top level talks, the ceremony of signing bilateral documents took place.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Swiss Confederation Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf signed the Convention between Turkmenistan and the Swiss Confederation for Avoidance of Double Taxation with respect to income and capital taxes.

The Memorandum of Mutual Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, the Memorandum of Mutual Understanding between the Institute of International Relations under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (Geneva, Switzerland), the Memorandum of Mutual Understanding between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan and the Joint Chambers of Commerce (JCC) Switzerland – Russia/CIS were signed during the ceremony.

In conclusion of the signing ceremony, the leaders of the two countries made a brief address to the media.

After the press conference an official reception was given on behalf of President of the Swiss Confederation Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf in honour of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The leaders of Turkmenistan and the Swiss Confederation gave the speeches during the official reception.

It should be noted that on instruction of the President of Turkmenistan the members of the Government delegation of our country held a number of meetings with their Swiss colleagues. The existing potential and prospects of developing the bilateral cooperation in various spheres were discussed during the meetings.

In the afternoon President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov visited the Historical Museum of Bern, got acquainted with its expositions and wrote an entry to the Book of Guests of Honour.

Then the President of Turkmenistan headed to the Federal palace, where the Turkmen leader met with Speaker of the National Council of the Federal Assembly of the Swiss Confederation Hansjörg Walter.

Speaking about the favourable prospects for increasing the Turkmen-Swiss cooperation in its key spheres, the President of Turkmenistan and Speaker of the National Council of the Federal Assembly of the Swiss Confederation underlined the significance of strengthening the parliamentary ties as an integral factor of successful development of the bilateral relations and called for establishing the mutually beneficial exchange of experience in the law-making activity.

In conclusion of the meeting President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov wrote an entry to the Book of Guests of Honour.

On that day the President of Turkmenistan left Bern for Geneva. In his official residence in the Hotel President Wilson, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received the Chairman of the Board of the Solid Energy Solutions Company.
