The Days of Culture of Turkmenistan in Washington

The Days of Culture of Turkmenistan started in the capital of the United States of America to mark the remarkable event in the history of interstate cooperation – the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and the United States of America.

This large-scale cultural action organized in the United States in accordance with the Resolution of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and under the bilateral intergovernmental agreements for the first time is a landmark event which is to offer a powerful incentive to foster the full-scale dialogue between the two countries.

Promoting the open-door policy and multifaceted international cooperation, Turkmenistan attaches considerable significance to enhancing bilateral relations with the United States as one of the strategic and promising partners of our country. Bilateral relations have been filled with a new content in the present epoch. Cooperation between the two nations is expanded through implementing joint projects in various fields.

The main aim of this cultural action is to enhance further humanitarian cooperation and present the centuries-old traditions and unique heritage of the Turkmen people and the accomplishments and achievements of modern Turkmenistan to the people in the United States.

The Turkmen delegation consisting of workers of culture and art, renowned writers, artists, opera singers, musicians, dancers, cinematographers, specialists of the Ministry of Culture, the National Department for Preservation, Study and Restoration of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Turkmenistan and journalists have arrived to Washington to take part in the forum.

The ceremony of opening the Days of Culture of Turkmenistan took place at the Library of Congress, the leading center of science and culture in the country, one of the largest libraries in the world. The representatives of the US Department of State, of the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the well-known American company Chevron, the Embassy of Turkmenistan to the United States and other officials, workers of culture and art and journalists of this country attended the opening ceremony.

Those speaking at the opening ceremony noted that a cultural exchange was a critical aspect of international cooperation the main goal of which is the prosperity and wellbeing of the two nations and underlined the significance of this action which would help the people of Turkmenistan and the United States know and understand each other better, enrich the national cultures, promote further fruitful partnership and strengthen peace.

It was noted that the United States attached significant importance to fostering the constructive dialogue with Turkmenistan that pursued the constructive foreign policy strategy under the leadership of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to enhance mutually beneficial partnership with different countries worldwide. In this context emphasis was placed on the significance of the Turkmen leader’s initiatives put forward from the rostrum of the UN General Assembly to ensure peace, wellbeing and sustainable development and supported by the US Government.

It was noted that the increasing dynamics of relations between Turkmenistan and the United States opened up the vast opportunities for cooperation in the humanitarian sphere. Deputy Assistant Secretary Susan Elliott mentioned the Turkmen leader’s visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art during his visit to New York this autumn where the President of Turkmenistan had participated in the roundtable on cultural cooperation issues.

That meeting once again testified to priority attention that the Turkmen leader paid to promoting humanitarian cooperation as an essential component of Turkmenistan-United States relations. In this context the ceremony participants highly evaluated the Turkmen leader’s initiative to create a virtual gallery of Turkmen art which would become an opportunity to present the richness and diversity of the artistic traditions and cultural heritage of the Turkmen people.

This is the aim of the cultural actions being held in Washington these days. It will allow local citizens to learn about culture and art of our people. Meeting participants noted that the Days of Culture of Turkmenistan were another vivid evidence for the success of Turkmenistan-U.S. cooperation and would contribute to strengthening friendly relations between our countries.

During the opening ceremony the books by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov were donated to the Library of Congress. Accepting the present, a representative of the Library expressed deep gratitude to the Turkmen leader for his contribution to fostering the cultural dialogue between our peoples and emphasized that the new books would have a worthy place in the collection of the Library of Congress consisting of a great number of scientific, literary and other materials about Turkmenistan.

A part of this collection was presented at the exhibition arranged in one of the halls of the Library of Congress within the framework of the ceremony. An exposition of the books, photo albums and other materials about modern Turkmenistan, its outstanding achievements in all spheres of the national economy, the life and traditions of the Turkmen people printed in our country was arranged there. After the Days of Culture of Turkmenistan in the United States are concluded, these publications will be donated to the US National Library.

The concert performed by famous Turkmen artists became an adornment of the ceremony. Its programme included the pieces of the national musical heritage, folk compositions, Turkmen classical opera arias and popular songs. Folk songs and melodies presenting the unique colours of Turkmen culture enraptured the audience. Fascinating music created by an outstanding Turkmen composer Nury Halmamedov produced a tremendous impression on the American audience.

The programme of the Days of Culture of Turkmenistan in the United States includes exhibitions, meetings, which will provide counterparts and citizens of the United States with a unique opportunity to see a diversity of Turkmen culture and art in the epoch of new Revival.

The film “Competition” based on Nurmyrad Saryhanov’s novel Shukur-bahshi, which belongs to the treasures of Turkmen cinematography, will arouse keen interest.
