The top level Turkmen-Latvian talks have taken place in Ashgabat within the framework of an official visit of President of the Republic of Latvia Andris Berzinsh, who arrived in the Turkmen capital on May 13.
The reciprocal visit of the head of the friendly Baltic state made on the invitation of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov can be considered as a symbol of willingness of the both countries for strengthening relations.
The top level talks will focus on cooperation in the trade and economic sectors, cultural and humanitarian spheres, the aspects of the international policy of mutual interests. Particular attention will be paid to the prospects of partnership within the framework of the constructive dialogue established between Turkmenistan and the European Union, a full member of which Latvia became in 2004.
It is notable that the top level meeting takes place on the jubilee year – the 20th anniversary of establishing the diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Latvia. The reliable legal basis of cooperation has been created within these twenty years. The work of the Interstate Turkmen-Latvian Commission on economic, industrial, scientific and technological cooperation, the first meeting of which took place in Riga last September on the eve of the visit of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the Republic of Latvia, promotes it.
The top level talks between the Presidents of Turkmenistan and the Republic of Latvia in September vividly demonstrated the potential for enhancing the trade and economic relations. Cooperation between the two states focuses on a number of important areas, in particular the fuel and energy sector as well as transport sphere.
As is known, possessing huge transit potential and developed transport infrastructure on land and sea, Latvia has great opportunities to become an important link in the international transport network created on the initiative of the Turkmen state.
Tourism is also considered as a significant area of the Turkmen-Latvian cooperation.
The economic partnership and implementation of important joint projects will be discussed during the top level talks and business forum with participation of numerous representatives of the state and private companies of the two countries.
