The Resolution on Reliable and stable transit of energy and its role in ensuring sustainable development and international cooperation adopted during the 67th session of the UN General Assembly on May 17, 2013 drew a wide response in the international life.
The fact that all UN member states unanimously adopted this document vividly proves the significance of initiatives put forward by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov with the aim to create a new global architecture of energy safety.
The Resolution developed jointly by 70 states laid the foundation for the UN Inter-regional energy dialogue with participation of all interested states and international organizations. The Turkmen strongly facilitates this idea that will promote the process of creating an international expert team in order to prepare a comprehensive international legal instrument covering various aspects of global energy cooperation.
In accordance with the existing regulations and in line with the Resolution, the UN Secretary-General will inquire the UN member states and relevant UN agencies, including the regional commissions, about the reliable and stable transit of energy resources, as well as the possible forms of international partnership in this area. Then, summarizing these views, the UN Secretary-General will submit the Secretariat report for further consideration at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.
Moreover, the UN General Assembly supported the initiative put forward by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to convene an international meeting of experts in early 2014 to consider the outcomes of the high level Conference on Reliable and stable transit of energy and its role in ensuring sustainable development and international cooperation held in Ashgabat in April 2009.
The official statement released by the UN News Center emphasizes that wide access to energy resources promotes creation of new jobs, security, monitoring climate change, food security as well as strengthens the national economies of countries and the most appropriate way to ensure this is an efficient and reliable transportation of energy between countries, regions and continents.
In this regard, the role and significance of transit and transport units in ensuring stable supplies of energy resources to international markets increases.
Thus, international cooperation in the energy sector is considered today as one of the determining factors for general well-being, progress and prosperity. For this reason, in recent years, Turkmenistan as one of the world's leading energy powers focuses on international activity paying particular attention to energy security.
