President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov completes state visit to Malaysia

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov completed the state visit to Malaysia yesterday.

The second day of the Turkmen leader’s visit to Malaysia was marked by the profoundly symbolic event – the title of Honorary Doctor of the Petronas University of Technology, one of the prestigious research and education institutions of this country was conferred to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

In the morning on that day the cortege of the President of Turkmenistan headed to the Petronas Twin Towers. Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas, President and CEO of Petronas cordially greeted President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at the entrance to the magnificent buildings. The Turkmen leader accompanied by the officials entered the building where the top managers and specialists of the Malaysian company, Turkmen young people studying in this country, students and professors of the Petronas University of Technology and numerous guests heartily greeted him.

Local artists performed an ancient Malaysian dance to the wonderful folk melodies and strew petals of fragrant flowers on the floor as the Turkmen leader was moving towards the Nobat Hall in token of deep respect for the distinguished guest.

In the Nobat Hall the head of the world-renowned company congratulated the leader of Turkmenistan on the success of the state visit to Malaysia and emphasized that the Turkmen-Malaysian top level talks had added a new page to the history of traditionally friendly interstate relations. Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas said the Malaysian business community highly evaluated the increasing potential of the basic sectors of Turkmen economy that was dynamically integrating into the world economy. In this context emphasis was placed on the willingness of Petronas, one of the world’s largest companies to expand further partnership with Turkmenistan in the oil and gas sector.

Thanking for the kind words, the Turkmen leader said he regarded the top level talks in Kuala Lumpur as evidence for strengthened Turkmen-Malaysian contacts which embraced more spheres of cooperation. Major requisite are created by the profound economic, resource, technological potential of the two countries.

An exchange of views on the current state and prospects of cooperation in the fuel and energy sector took place during the meeting. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that pursuing the integrated strategy for modernisation of the fuel and energy sector and diversification of transit of Turkmen energy to world markets, Turkmenistan as one of the world’s energy powers aimed to build up mutually advantageous international cooperation, including with its long-term partners such as Petronas.

Highly evaluating the active investment policy of Petronas that had invested over US$ 5.6 billion in developing offshore deposits in the Caspian Sea, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed gratitude to the Malaysian partners for their long-term fruitful activity in Turkmenistan.

Discussing the prospects for further development of mutually advantageous cooperation, the sides noted that it was built up on a long-term and integrated basis, including collaboration in such an important area as training of highly qualified specialists for the Turkmen oil and gas industry. As is known, dozens of Turkmen citizens had studied and are studying at the Petronas University of Technology. Also, Turkmen specialists attend the short-term training courses in Malaysia. In this context the President and CEO of Petronas underlined the readiness of his company and the Government of Malaysia to increase a quota for admission of Turkmen students to Malaysian higher schools.

At the conclusion of the meeting the President summed up the conversation and expressed gratitude to the top manager of one of the world’s leading oil and gas companies for the achievements and long-term cooperation.

Shamsul Azhar Abbas assured the Turkmen leader that his company would spare no effort to meet its partnership commitments and fulfil the action plans and reaffirmed that Petronas was keenly interested in stepping up fruitful cooperation with Turkmenistan.

Then the academicians and the members of the Academic Council of the Petronas University of Technology whose research activities had significantly contributed to modern science, professors and students of the Petronas University of Technology, one of the major research and education centres in Malaysia, and journalists gathered together in the assembly hall where the ceremony of conferring the title of Honorary Doctor of the Petronas University of Technology to the President of Turkmenistan took place. The Turkmen leader dressed in an academic robe accompanied by Malaysian scientists and research appeared in the hall. The audience rose to their feet to greet the President of Turkmenistan.

Opening the ceremony, the President and CEO of Petronas greeted the Turkmen leader on behalf of the company Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and congratulated on the opened up vast opportunities to foster mutually advantageous relations.

Today, said the President and CEO of Petronas, in this solemn moment we are rejoicing together with the Turkmen people at the title of Honorary Doctor of the Petronas University of Technology conferred to the deeply esteemed President of Turkmenistan for the outstanding contribution to developing the fuel and energy sector and sustainable development of Central Asian states, the initiatives to promote universal human values.

Then the floor was given to Pro-rector of the University who told in detail about the science career of Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, Doctor of Medicine and Economics, Honorary Doctor and Honorary Professor of the world’s major research centres Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov putting emphasis on his invaluable contribution to modern science. Then he then read out the decision of the Academic Council of the Petronas University of Technology to confer the title of Honorary Doctor of the Petronas University of Technology to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

It was noted that the large-scale progressive reforms launched in Turkmenistan under the leadership of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov facilitated the integration of the country into the world economy and enhancement of its international prestige. Underscoring the profound contribution the leader of the Turkmen state had made to strengthening and enhancing the dialogue with Malaysia in the present period, the Pro-rector noted that an important component of cooperation between the friendly countries and brotherly nations was contacts in the humanitarian sphere, particularly in the education sector.

Then Rector of the University Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad emphasized that this day would go down in history of the

Petronas University of Technology as a remarkable, deeply symbolic event and presented the diploma to the President of Turkmenistan to the applause of ceremony participants.

Addressing the audience, the Turkmen leader expressed sincere gratitude for the high appreciation of his activities.

I accept this award especially as a symbol of friendship, a sign of respect for Turkmenistan and its people, as evidence for long-term successful cooperation between our countries, said the Turkmen leader noting that the Petronas’s effective operation significantly contributed to developing the oil and gas sector of Turkmenistan.

Describing the large-scale social and economic changes taking place in Turkmenistan, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that their main goal was to bring Turkmenistan to the level of developed countries with the high living standards and promote the implementation of the intellectual potential of the nation.

Modernizing the education sector and providing citizens, especially youth, with access to scientific advances are the priority vectors of our state policy embracing such aspects as promotion of productive contacts with foreign educational institutions and training centres, said the Turkmen leader.

Noting that dozens of Turkmen young people studies today at the Petronas University of Technology, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed gratitude to the administration and teaching staff of this higher school for their contribution to training highly qualified specialists for Turkmenistan.

Malaysia is a developed country, said President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. Having thoroughly studied its unique economic model, I can say with confidence that Turkmenistan also pursues the national model of development. Our country gains profit from not only oil and gas exports. We have diversified our economies, and now we are rapidly developing industries such as the transport and communications, construction, fuel and energy sectors. We have not been affected by the global financial and economic crisis due to timely preventive measures.

Addressing the Turkmen young people who study in Malaysia and were present at that historic moment in the hall, the Turkmen leader said they were to receive education, become highly qualified specialists and return to the Motherland. You should become specialists able to use scientific and technological advances in practice. Turkmenistan is your Motherland! And you are its future. While studying in Malaysia, you should respect the customs and laws of this country and cultural traditions of this nation.

The Malaysian audience greeted these words of the Turkmen leader with stormy applause.

As is known, cooperation between Turkmenistan and Malaysia in the present epoch serves as a model of friendly, equitable relationship based on mutual confidence.

Our people are committed to common values and views, the Turkmen and the Malaysian people have much in common in their traditions and the spiritual and moral principles. And this is a good foundation to foster humanitarian cooperation and contacts in the spheres of education, science and culture. We will continue to actively encourage this cooperation and promote mutual understanding between our peoples so that they will know each other better, said President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

Noting that this visit had resulted in reaching new agreements and signing important documents, the Turkmen leader expressed belief that they would give a new impetus to steadily build up bilateral partnership in the long-term interests of Turkmenistan and Malaysia and promote mutual understanding between the two nations.

The Petronas University of Technology plays an important role in and significantly contributes to stepping up cooperation in the spheres of science and education, said President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov wishing the teaching staff and students of the University new achievements and every success in their activity and studies.

The audience greeted the Turkmen leader’s speech with the storm of applause.

Then the leader of the Turkmen state walked around the Petronas Twin Towers and got acquainted with the origin of these skyscrapers. During the conversation the President of Turkmenistan asked about the construction specifications, innovative technologies and engineering solutions used to build the Petronas Towers, the architectural features, interior decorations and civil engineering infrastructure of these skyscrapers.

An official dinner was given in honour of the distinguished Turkmen guest on behalf of Rector of the Petronas University of Technology Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad.

After the dinner was concluded, the cortege of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov headed to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport where the ceremony of bidding farewell to the leader of Turkmen state took place.

At the Ashgabat International Airport the heads of the Mejlis, cabinet ministers, high-ranking officials of ministries and departments greeted President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and congratulated on the success of the state visit to Malaysia.
