The winners of the Star of the Year Song Contest (Yylyn parlak yyldyzy) were declared. The contest that has been held for the third time this year is one of most remarkable cultural events in the country. The marathon of cultural actions, including concerts, art contests and competitions is giving momentum on the eve of the most favourite and joyful holiday, the New Year’s Day.

The Star of the Year Contest held among young singers and musicians is aimed at encouraging professional growth of artists and promoting the national music in modern times. The qualification rounds of the Contest organized by Magtymguly Youth Organisation and the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting and Cinematography, in particular, the Turkmen Ovazy TV channel and the Ovaz radio channel, have been held through the year.

This year the selection has turned out to be difficult for the increased number of talented artists taking part. Active participation of the public, numerous telephone calls and SMS sent to the editorial boards of the national TV and radio channels helped to reveal the most popular singers who had won the sincere sympathy of the overwhelming majority of the TV and radio audience in all regions of our country.

Renowned cultural and art workers, popular singers and musicians, artists, writers, poets and representatives of other creative professions were invited to take part in the final of Yylyn Parlak Yyldyzy Contest as the viewers and as the jury. Each of them could give their votes to the artist they liked most, and each vote could be crucial in deciding the winner of the acute competition.

According to the rules the singers performed two songs in the final. The participants had to sing a capella that revealed the vocal harmonies and helped them use voice to its full. The professionals could evaluate the ‘pure’ vocal of each participant, the power and beauty of their voices. Furthermore, this trial allowed spotlighting the artistic skills and ability of young singers to communicate with the audience.

The final lasted for several hours, but the strong positive emotions fed the spirit of creativity that was soaring under the arches of the magnificent Palace of Congress. During the concert the audience could vote using the special cards and the jury could share their opinion of the singers’ performances.

Whilst the points were being calculated, renowned musicians and singers performed on the stage presenting wonderful melodies and favourite songs to the audience.

Then the presenters announced the result. A five-year student of the Turkmen National Conservatoire Atajan Berdyev was declared the winner of the Star of the Year Song Contest. It was he who received points from the most jury members and the audience for his outstanding talent and great potential.

Atajan is known to the wide audience by his performances in concerts and television and radio programmes. His rising star is difficult to ignore for his enchanting and rich voice and charisma. His first career step was the victory in the Yanlan, Diyar Contest held amateur singers in 2003. Over these years Atajan has learned a lot, and his victory in the Star of the Year Song Contest is the deserved success and claim to countrywide popularity.

People’s Artist of Turkmenistan, Hero of Turkmenistan Maya Kulieva, whose contribution to the development and promotion of the national art and professional experience are tremendous, presented the Yylyn parlak Yyldyzy Cup to the winner.

“Though all participants dreamed of winning the Contest, I should confess I didn’t expect to be declared the Star of the Year,” said Atajan Berdyev. “I am very grateful to everyone who supported me as well as the prestigious jury for their decision. I am very happy and I realise that this recognition presents inspiration as well as imposes awesome responsibility.”

The jury highly evaluated the talent and artistic skills of Eldar Ahmadov and Ali Aliev who ranked the first and second respectively. They received valuable gifts. The prize of the winner of the Star of the Year Contest is a tourist trip to a foreign country.

It should be noted that the ‘musical marathon’ continues, and the ‘star’ theme sounds in musical life of our country. The final of the national rounds of the Eurasia Star Song Contest took place in Ashgabat last month. Sohbet Kasimov represented our country among young singers from the Turkic countries in this international music contest.

Currently, this talented singer takes part in the international semi-finals which have taken place in Northern Cyprus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan where Sohbet won the sympathy of the audience and found sincere admirers. Sohbet will perform together with the finalists from the other Turkic countries in Turkey early next year. The next round of this music festival will be hosted by the Turkmen capital.

For Turkmenistan it is another splendid opportunity to present its culture and arts in diversity in the big international arena.
