The meridian of history

Over 10,000 items supplemented the exposition of the main museum of the country last year. The museum collection included 116,000 items at the beginning of 2011; this figure has risen to almost 127,000 by the end of the year. Over 166,000 people visited the Main Museum of Turkmenistan last year.

The pride of the museum collection is the invaluable rarities – the results of the laborious work Turkmen and foreign archaeologists have carried out on the territory of legendary Nisa, Ancient Merv and other outdoor historical and cultural monuments. Some archaeological collections are composed of a single piece of ancient and medieval arts excavated on the territory of the country. The collection of the Ethnography Section covers a significant part of the history that is represented through the history of religion, crafts, way of life and folklore of the Turkmen nation. The collection of Turkmen jewellery including over 1,500 beautiful pieces is singularly diverse. The exposition of the section dedicated to local history and nature presenting the animal and plant kingdoms and natural sites of our country is of particular interest.

The exposition of the President’s Museum reflects the modern history of independent neutral Turkmenistan: its collection provides a splendid opportunity to learn more about the events taking place throughout the country without visiting remote settlements that a new life together with plants and factories, traffic arteries and industrial infrastructure is coming to.

Currently, the work on the establishment of the Galkynysh Museum, the Bitaraplyk Museum and the Garassyzlyk Museum affiliated with the Main National Museum of Turkmenistan is carried out. They will be housed by the Monument to the Constitution, the Neutrality Monument and the Independence Monument respectively.
