The beauty contest of Ahalteke horses starts

The first qualifying round of the beauty contest of Ahalteke horses that brought together the most beautiful and graceful representatives of the unique horse breed from all over Turkmenistan has taken place in Ashgabat this week. The organizer of the contest initiated by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov is the Turkmen Atlary State Association.

Numerous admirers of the ‘heavenly’ horses had an excellent opportunity to see the elite representatives of the legendary horse breed. The best exterior and dynamic features and the ability of every horse to perform various commands were demonstrated to the spectators. The wonderful stature and incomparable beauty of fast horses won the audience.


The satin colour, long and thin legs, graceful neck and perfectly built body of Ahalteke horses, lightness and swiftness of their run, incredible endurance are the result of the creativity and diligence of many generations of horse breeders and horse trainers, whose traditions are maintained by their successors, contemporary highly qualified specialists, true enthusiasts and experts in their field.

According to the Turkmen Atlary State Association, Ahalteke horses aged from 3 to 10 years, including horses kept at the departmental and private stables, are taking part in the contest.

Dozens of applications for the beauty contest have been submitted to the special commission at the Turkmen Atlary State Association. It consists of renowned horse breeders together with cultural and art workers from all over Turkmenistan.

Over 50 magnificent Ahalteke horses appeared before the jury. It appraised the exterior, beauty, grace and pedigree characteristics and chose the most worthy contenders for the title of the Horse of the Year. To choose the beautiful and graceful horses among the best representatives of the breed was not easy. 20 ‘heavenly’ horses are the winners in the first round. They are to go through a more rigorous selection process at the next stage of the contest.

The final round of the contest that has gained great popularity among admirers of Ahalteke horses as well as prestige among professional horse breeders will be held on the last Sunday of April when our country is celebrating Turkmen Horse Day.
