Central Commission for Election and Referenda delivers latest election results
The Central Commission for Election and Referenda of Turkmenistan held a press conference at which it delivered the latest election results.
It brought together journalists of the major news agencies, online, print and other mass media of foreign countries accredited to our country, the members of the Observer Mission of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the delegation of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the Middle East and West Asia Division of the UN Department of Political Affairs, the heads and journalists of the news agencies.
Before delivering the latest election results, the Chairman of the Central Commission for Election and Referenda briefed on the large-scale work done to prepare and hold this important political action and thanked all those who had contributed to the election process. Special gratitude was expressed to the foreign guests for their proposals for improvement of the election process.
Announcing the latest election results, the Chairman of the Central Commission for Election and Referenda reported that according to the information provided by the polling stations including those abroad, 96.7 percent of the electorate had cast their votes in the presidential election which testified to high civil activity of citizens and their deliberate intention to actively contribute to the ongoing democratic process in Turkmenistan.
According to preliminary data, the Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov obtained the largest number of votes – 97.14 percent. Currently, the votes including those cast at the polling stations opened at the diplomatic representations and consular offices of Turkmenistan in foreign countries are being counted. The election records are delayed from the countries situated in different time zones because of the time difference.
The vote totals will be determined within the next few days and announced at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan in accordance with the national laws.
