President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was unanimously re-elected as President of the National Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan for a four-year term during the report-and-election meeting of the General Assembly of the National Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan.

Those speaking at the meeting noted that promotion of the sports and physical culture movement is a state policy priority in our country through the unceasing concern of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who is an ardent supporter and adherent of a healthy lifestyle. This is vividly illustrated by large-scale construction of sports facilities in towns and villages.

The open door policy and the strategy of wide international cooperation pursued by the leader of the Turkmen state, the organisation of large international sports competitions in Turkmenistan and wider involvement of Turkmen athletes in the Olympic movement have given Turkmen sport a powerful impetus to develop. The participation in the ХХIХ Summer Olympics in Beijing offered new incentives to Turkmen sportsmen. As is known, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov arrived in the Chinese capital to attend the ceremony of opening the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games where he addressed Turkmen sportsmen with words of encouragement.

In April 2009 the Olympic Council of Asia presented the Order of Merit to the leader of Turkmenistan in recognition of his services to the international sports movement.

The issues regarding the promotion of the Olympic movement in the country were considered during the meeting. The task to win as many quota places for the 2012 London Olympic Games as possible was set during the meeting. Emphasis was placed on the thorough selection of talented sportsmen in the national teams who would participate in the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games that Ashgabat would be hosting in 2017 at the decision of the Olympic Council of Asia.
