Turkmen embroidery is included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, such a decision was made at the 17th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in the city of Rabat (Morocco).

The report notes that on December 1, 2022, on the basis of broad consensus, the above Committee unanimously decided to include the nomination «The Art of Turkmen Embroidery» in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This nomination was initiated by Turkmenistan in March 2021 as an important part of the country's intangible cultural heritage. At the same time, the Islamic Republic of Iran acted as a co-author of the nomination.

On the sidelines of the session, the delegation of Turkmenistan held a presentation on the rich art of Turkmen embroidery. Representatives of the evaluation commission of the Intergovernmental Committee noted the special influence of the mentioned element on the life and fate of the peoples of Turkmenistan and Iran.

On the same day, the multinational nomination «Sericulture and traditions of silk production in weaving» was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The co-authors of this nomination were Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. In addition, during the session, another multinational nomination «Traditions of retelling Hodja Nasreddin's anecdotes» was unanimously approved, co-authored by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
