Mandrake is in bloom in the Botanical Garden

In the Botanical Garden of the Institute of Botany at the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, precinctive plant of the southwest Kopetdag – epibiotic representative of the ancient Turkmen flora – Turkmen mandrake first blossomed in conditions of Ashgabat. This plant kept in hothouse conditions for wintering started to blossom early.

This fact has gladdened the personnel of the local flora laboratory of the Botanical Garden, who have carefully looked after several specimens of the plant within twelve years. Seeds of this plant have been delivered from the Scientific Production Experimental Center of the country’s Institute of Botany on research and reproduction of the subtropical plants located in the Magtymguly etrap of the Balkan province.

Mandrake being one of the most ancient representatives of verdure on the territory of our country belongs to the family of Solanaceae like well-known tomato. But in contrast to usual tomato, it is a toxic plant, which medicinal properties are famous from time immemorial. There is rare population of mandrake in nature; this plant numbers nearly 400 specimens. The botanists know every single one of them. At present, the Botanical Garden keeps the plantations of mandrake of different ages. The last one was planted with the use of biohumus.

On the territory of local flora lot next to mandrake, Batghyz urgen finishes blossoming and wild onion opened its white bluebells. It was delivered from the Sunt-Hasardag nursery, where a whole plot of land of beautiful wild onion in blossom is possible to be observed in March. There are also the sprouts of first planted wild onion from Holland as well as Batghyz sagebrush planted last year.
