The 25th anniversary International Festival of Russian theaters "Meetings in Russia", organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, began its work in St. Petersburg. The event is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the playwright Alexander Ostrovsky.
The city on the Neva, declared in 2023 the cultural capital of the CIS countries, brought together leading theater groups from 10 Commonwealth countries. Among the festival participants are representatives of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Abkhazia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Belarus and Russia.
Ashgabat youth theater "ArtIst" under the direction of Igor Annaklychev takes part in this festival for the first time. The performance based on the play by Alexander Ostrovsky "Profitable Place" staged by the young director Mekan Dzhumabaev will be shown on April 10 , at 19:00, on the Big Stage of the Baltic House Theatre.
In addition, within the framework of the festival there will be premieres of other performances based on Ostrovsky: “What you go for, you will find” by the State Russian Drama Theater named after Vladimir Mayakovsky (Dushanbe, Tajikistan), “The Marriage of Balzaminov” by the Yerevan State Russian Drama Theater named after Konstantin Stanislavsky, “ Bankrupt, or Our people - let's settle" of the State Academic Russian Drama Theater of Uzbekistan (Tashkent).
On Ostrovsky's birthday, April 12, the State Russian Drama Theater. F. A. Iskander (Sukhum, Republic of Abkhazia) will present the premiere of the play "Profitable Place" directed by director Irina Dryomova.
One of the main events of the festival will be the IV International Conference "Russian Theater Abroad as an Institute of Russian Culture", which is part of the activities of the Association of Russian Theaters Abroad.
During the week, creative meetings, master classes and discussions of performances will also be held at the festival site. By the anniversary of the event, a photo exhibition of performances by Russian theaters of the CIS countries “Twenty-Five Years Together” will open, which will tell about the most interesting productions created over a quarter of a century by participating theaters. The festival will end on April 16th.
