On October 27, the people of Turkmenistan celebrated the main national holiday, the Independence Day which is marked by the 20th anniversary this year.
These days the national festivities are taking place throughout the country in the atmosphere of inspiration and spiritual revival. The ceremonies of opening new apartment houses, sports complexes and kindergartens and other social, cultural and industrial facilities were held in the capital of our country, in all regions of the country, in big and small towns and settlements to mark this wonderful holiday. Bright musical events arranged on the squares, in the parks and at the cultural centres fill the hearts of our compatriots with the joy and boundless pride in our sovereign Motherland that is reviving for a new life and inspired with the thought of creation, reforms and constructive endeavours.
The venue for the anniversary celebrations became the main square of the Turkmen capital and country that had been recently renovated. It welcomed thousands of citizens of Ashgabat and guests from all regions of the country and foreign states in all its splendour.
The festive attire of the square was composed of the pictures of the state symbols and the green banners of the national flags. The cabinet ministers, deputies of the Mejlis, the heads of ministries and departments, the public organisations of the Galkynys National Movement, the heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Turkmenistan and the delegates of the XIV Conference of the World Turkmen and the Elders’ Council meeting gathered together on the central stands.
At 10 a.m. President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov walked up to the central stand on the main square of the country. Participants and guests to the celebrations heartily greeted the Turkmen leader.
The grandiose festivities began with the military parade in honour of the anniversary of independence. The parade showcased the defence capacity of the Turkmen state and professionalism of Turkmen soldiers who stand guard vigilantly over a peaceful and happy life of the people, defend the sacred borders of the Motherland and great achievements of the independence.
Minister of Defence of Turkmenistan B. Gundogdyev reported to President of Turkmenistan, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Turkmenistan General of the Army Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
The national anthem of Turkmenistan was performed. It was followed by a salute. The national flag of Turkmenistan was hoisted.
Turkmen officers, soldiers and students of the high military schools lined up on the square. They swore allegiance to the nation, the Fatherland, the President. Nowadays, they maintain the ancestors’ traditions and hold the title of defenders of the Motherland up.
The soldiers of the detached battalion of the guard of honour brought the battle flags of the Armed Forces to the square.
Young drummers - students of the military schools of the Great Saparmurat Turkmenbashi Military Institute of the Ministry of Defence followed the standard-bearers. A new military school designed for 600 children will be open through the concern of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat in the near future.
The battalions of officers of the Ministry of Defence marched on the main square. Looking at them one can be sure that cohesion and peace of the Motherland are in safe hands. Turkmen pilots, who defend the peaceful sky over our country, followed them.
The battalions of students of the Military Institute, future motorised infantry men and tank crew members, who had showed the outstanding results in military and theoretical trainings, appeared on the square. Military servicewomen and students of the military schools marched past. Today women in the national army make a worthy contribution to ensuring peace and prosperity of our country.
The columns of best representatives of all branches of the national army, including military aviation, landing troops, navy, marine and anti-aircraft forces appeared on the square following one another. They are the pride of the Motherland, its unbreakable shield.
The joint battalion of the engineer and chemical troops, who had demonstrated the brilliant military combating technique and professionalism during the Galkan-2011 military exercises, marched past the central stand. They were followed by the civil defence and rescue battalion.
Then the best students of the Institute of the National Security Institute and the Border Guard Institute marching under the battle flags followed them the battle flags handed over by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief are their pride and a symbol of everlasting devotion to the Motherland.
The battalion of military servants the special unit of the State Border Guard Service appeared on the square. They defend and ensure inviolability of the borders of the Motherland as the apple of their eyes. They are followed by the column of police officers and students of the S. A. Niyazov Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The procession of military servants riding wonderful Ahalteke horses was an adornment of the festive military parade of the main square of the country.
The columns of the mechanized troops appeared on the square. The BARS and Land Rower vehicles, the Caracal antitank missile complex, the MALUTKA anti-tank complex, BTR-80, BTR-80A and BTR-80M armoured troop carriers appeared on the square. They were followed by the special vehicles, which help combat medics to work in the field, such as Landrower-130 amblans and mobile military hospitals on KAMAZ vehicles.
The specialized MAZ vehicles, which are used by civil defence detachments in emergency situations, appeared on the square.
The second column was composed of the MANTRA and PMV-SURVIVOR II armoured vehicles with Toyota HILUX and SKYLARK pilotless planes designed for border troops. They are followed by the specialized vehicles such as UAZ Patriot, Toyota TUNDRA PLATINUM, Mersedes Benz S-350, Chevrolet Captiva which had recently replenished the fleet of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in particular the traffic police units.
Armoured military equipment including T-90 and T-72 tanks, infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) of various modifications drove to the main square. The trucks with trailers capable to carry heavy equipment followed them. Self-propelled artillery guns including 2C-1 Pink and 2C-3 Akacia howitzers, Shturm-C antitank rocket complexes, Shilka, KUB, Strela-10 anti-aircraft systems, MT-12 Rapira, D-20 and D-30, M-46, MSTA-B, Gyacint-B artillery guns drove to the square. They were followed by the columns of mechanized rocket artillery systems such as modern BM Grad-1, Uragan, Smerch volley-fire rocket system and Kolchuga, Osa, C-125, Pechora -2M, C-200V anti-aircraft missile complex placed at the disposal of armed anti-aircrafts forces.

It was followed by the helicopters manufactured by world’s leading producers. These aircrafts are used nowadays by the Ministry of National Security, the Traffic Control Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Border Guard Service and the State Service on Drugs.
MI-24P, MI-17V-5 and MI-8MT helicopters of the Air Force of Turkmenistan flew over the square. Turkmen pilots were flying advanced aerobatics.
After the ‘air’ parade was concluded, the festivities were continued on the main square of the country. A battalion of the detached battalion of the guard of honour of the Ministry of Defence appeared in front of the central stands. The soldiers were standing to form the map state of Turkmenistan. This wonderful Ahalteke light-bay horse was presented to the leader of the Turkmen state on behalf of his associates in token of profound, sincere gratitude for the titanic efforts for the benefit and happiness of the Motherland and the Turkmen people and in honour of the 20th anniversary of independence of Turkmenistan. The horse stopped in front of the central stand and gracefully bowed to the national leader.
Then five dzhigits dressed in national costumes appeared on the square. Participants and guests of the festivities recognized the rhythmic melody of the national dance Kusht-depdi from the first sounds of music. The horses ridden by dzhigits started moving in time with the music with amazing accuracy and smoothness, and the specific steps of this dance were recognizable in their movements. The audience rewarded them with the rapturous applause.
Then Turkmen dzhigits riding wonderful Ahalteke horses who formed the Roman numeral XX were the next to appear on the square. A rider carrying the green banners in his hands moved at the head of the column. This festive ceremonial became a bright symbol of invariable adherence of the Turkmen people to their age-old traditions and cultural origins in our age of high technologies.

Representatives of national ministries and departments, workers and specialists of all sectors of the national economy appeared on the main square of the country. They followed the vehicles decorated with the models and colourful pictures illustrating modern achievements of Turkmenistan.
It is symbolic that the spheres of science and education that the Turkmen leader assigns the role of an intellectual engine of the further development of out country were the first to be represented at the parade.
Then followed the health care sector in the procession; at that moment the square in front of the stands became white – the traditional colour of robes of health professionals. A festively decorated vehicle with the models showcasing the achievements of the national health system, which had been brought in compliance with international standards in recent years, floated across this snow-white living field above which white balloons whirling like the new-fallen snow.
The cries of seagulls which were heard on the square before the next colourful ‘picture’ appeared on the square – blue and sand-coloured costumes of participants of the parade formed the living images of the seashore, this impression was enhanced with the roaring waters: the Avaza national tourism zone – a brainchild of the Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov – has became some kind of symbol of the fundamental reforms, a new life of Turkmenistan.
Following the motor vehicle designed as the emblem of the new seaside resort, which had added a new chapter to the history of tourism business in Turkmenistan, a ‘mini stadium’ with the huge Olympic torch drove into the square. This model illustrating the achievements in promoting sport in the country, Turkmen sportsmen – masters of sports, champions and prize winners of national and international competitions gathered round it.
The vehicle with the models of new buildings, which had adorned the Turkmen capital in recent years in the framework of the ambitious urban planning programme, appeared on the square. A crane in the composition served as a vivid symbol of the reforms in other towns and villages throughout the country.

The unique wealth of its depths allowed Turkmenistan to rank among world’s energy producers. The achievements of the oil and gas and power industries were vividly displayed in the decorations of the motor vehicles.

A powerful impetus to develop has been given to the carpet industry during the years of independence; the network of carpet enterprises has been actively extended in all regions of the country.

Among them were specialists of the transport, communications and telecommunications sectors. The modern transport and communications networks have been established during the years of independence. Significant efforts are taken to develop railway and highway networks. The festively decorated vehicles made this procession bright and illustrative. The model depicted the aircrafts of the emblem of Turkmen airlines – a falcon flying above the globe, trains and motor vehicles rushing, sea vessels cleaving the water…
Representatives of the army of many thousands of the cultural spheres, cultural workers, artists and specialists of cultural institutions appeared on the square. The stage with the lyre – a symbol of inspiration and the dutar – a symbol of the ancient origins of the national culture moved across the square.
The most colourful and largest portion of the festive procession was given rightfully to children – the hope and future of the Turkmen state.
Turkmenistan is the country of happy childhood where the dearest wishes come true! It is not a slogan; it is the reality, the moments of which like the flashings of the sun rays were reflected in the design of the wheeled decorations. There was the fairytale Firebird that brought children sitting on its back to the world of fantasies, and a camel dressed in festive attire that carried kids to festivities and a white sailer that rocked on the waves in Avaza as a symbol of children’s dreams about long journeys and discoveries, and flowerbeds with folk fairytale heroes…
The anniversary celebrations taking place on the main square of the country were concluded with a bright music and dance composition dedicated to the epoch of new Revival, the Turkmen leader, the Motherland and independence.

In his keynote speech before the Elders’ Council meeting President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said particularly, “the 20th anniversary of glorious independence is not only a big holiday in the life of our people, it is a splendid opportunity to look back and impartially evaluate the way we have made, in historical perspective comprehend everything we have achieved and identified the tasks we are to fulfil.”
The Turkmen leader noted that “the heights we have reached and the outstanding victories we have achieved must get us calm down by no means. We are to fulfil the grandiose tasks which are equal by scale to the changes taking place worldwide.”
So, having crossed the threshold of 20 years of independent development filled with outstanding accomplishments and labour victories, the Turkmen people are entering a new stage of their history continuing to write the chronicle of the epoch of new revival under the leadership of their President. The cries of seagulls which were heard on the square before the next colourful ‘picture’ appeared on the square – blue and sand-coloured costumes of participants of the parade formed the living images of the seashore, this impression was enhanced with the roaring waters: the Avaza national tourism zone – a brainchild of the Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov – has became some kind of symbol of the fundamental reforms, a new life of Turkmenistan.
Following the motor vehicle designed as the emblem of the new seaside resort, which had added a new chapter to the history of tourism business in Turkmenistan, a ‘mini stadium’ with the huge Olympic torch drove into the square. This model illustrating the achievements in promoting sport in the country, Turkmen sportsmen – masters of sports, champions and prize winners of national and international competitions gathered round it.
The vehicle with the models of new buildings, which had adorned the Turkmen capital in recent years in the framework of the ambitious urban planning programme, appeared on the square. A crane in the composition served as a vivid symbol of the reforms in other towns and villages throughout the country.
On the square – workers and specialists of the fuel and energy industry, the basic sector of Turkmen economy. The unique wealth of its depths allowed Turkmenistan to rank among world’s energy producers. The achievements of the oil and gas and power industries were vividly displayed in the decorations of the motor vehicles.
The procession of workers and specialists of the economic sector and the banking and financial spheres of the national economy was nit less colourful. The models and pictures placed at their vehicle reflected the brisk business activity in Turkmenistan, including in its international dimension.
The festively decorated vehicles appeared on the square in front of the stands. A picturesque part of Turkmen nature was reproduced on one of them, and generous fruits of the Turkmen land and commodities manufactured by Turkmen producers – on the others; agricultural workers and specialists of from all regions of the country appeared on the square.
Specialists of the trade and service sectors of Turkmenistan participated in the festive parade. President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasizes that an essential factor in developing market competitive economy is steady development of the trade and service spheres and the private sectors.
Then it was the turn of textile workers to appear on the square. During the years of independence the textile industry in Turkmenistan has been recreated through using state-of-the-art equipment and advanced technologies. Now it is one of the export-oriented sectors of Turkmen economy. A powerful impetus to develop has been given to the carpet industry during the years of independence; the network of carpet enterprises has been actively extended in all regions of the country.
The columns of representatives of the labour collectives of the country appeared on the main square of the country following one another. Among them were specialists of the transport, communications and telecommunications sectors. The modern transport and communications networks have been established during the years of independence. Significant efforts are taken to develop railway and highway networks. The festively decorated vehicles made this procession bright and illustrative. The model depicted the aircrafts of the emblem of Turkmen airlines – a falcon flying above the globe, trains and motor vehicles rushing, sea vessels cleaving the water…
Representatives of the army of many thousands of the cultural spheres, cultural workers, artists and specialists of cultural institutions appeared on the square. The stage with the lyre – a symbol of inspiration and the dutar – a symbol of the ancient origins of the national culture moved across the square.
The most colourful and largest portion of the festive procession was given rightfully to children – the hope and future of the Turkmen state.
Turkmenistan is the country of happy childhood where the dearest wishes come true! It is not a slogan; it is the reality, the moments of which like the flashings of the sun rays were reflected in the design of the wheeled decorations. There was the fairytale Firebird that brought children sitting on its back to the world of fantasies, and a camel dressed in festive attire that carried kids to festivities and a white sailer that rocked on the waves in Avaza as a symbol of children’s dreams about long journeys and discoveries, and flowerbeds with folk fairytale heroes…
The anniversary celebrations taking place on the main square of the country were concluded with a bright music and dance composition dedicated to the epoch of new Revival, the Turkmen leader, the Motherland and independence.
The festivities which started in the heart of the Motherland continued in all of its regions where an atmosphere of enthusiasm, joy and happiness was reigning these days.
The streets festivities throughout Ashgabat continued till late at night. Cultural workers and artists performed a festive concert on the square in front of the Independence Monument where thousands of citizens and guests of the Turkmen capital that was receiving envoys from all regions of the country and foreign states had gathered.
Renowned cultural workers, popular young singers, artists of dance and folk ensembles glorified the wonderful epoch which had started to the fertile Turkmen land in their performances, expressed profound gratitude to the national leader for his unceasing concern for people’s welfare and prosperity of the country.
When it got dark, myriads of colourful lights of the fireworks illumined the night sky above the city. Sparkling with all colours of the rainbow and illuminating the rapturous faces of the people, the joyful sincere smiles eyes shining with happiness weird constellations blossomed aloft.
The spectacular display of firework in all regions of the country marked the remarkable date.
In his keynote speech before the Elders’ Council meeting President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said particularly, “the 20th anniversary of glorious independence is not only a big holiday in the life of our people, it is a splendid opportunity to look back and impartially evaluate the way we have made, in historical perspective comprehend everything we have achieved and identified the tasks we are to fulfil.”
The Turkmen leader noted that “the heights we have reached and the outstanding victories we have achieved must get us calm down by no means. We are to fulfil the grandiose tasks which are equal by scale to the changes taking place worldwide.”
So, having crossed the threshold of 20 years of independent development filled with outstanding accomplishments and labour victories, the Turkmen people are entering a new stage of their history continuing to write the chronicle of the epoch of new revival under the leadership of their President. New goals and heights of progress ad prosperity are waiting for us!
