The International Exhibition of Turkmen carpets

The International Exhibition of the Turkmen carpet weaving opened at the National Turkmen Carpet Museum. The largest sector forum is organized by the Turkmenhaly State Joint Stock Corporation and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan.

Representative delegations from 16 countries of Europe, Asia and the USA arrived to the Turkmen capital to participate in the forum. Among them are scientists and specialists, well-known carpet manufacturers and businessmen, heads of leading foreign companies, specialized stores and numerous admirers and connoisseurs of Turkmen hand carpet weaving.

The large-scale exposition of classic and modern original works of the national carpet weaving arranged in the halls of the National Turkmen Carpet Museum is aimed at demonstrating the successes and achievements of the national carpet weaving industry, the diversity of the unique works of the Turkmen carpet hand weaving. The celebrations have been arranged at the festively decorated area in front of the Museum building, where the pavilions decorated with wonderful carpets and the Turkmen yurts representing each velayat of the country were set up.

The annual sector exhibition showcases a brilliant collection of new wonderful carpet articles woven by talented carpet makers at the carpet enterprises of the Turkmenhaly State Joint Stock Corporation and private workshops.

Among them are renowned carpet makers, winners of the professional contest held on the eve of the Turkmen Carpet Day. The contest collection includes classical ornamental carpets, woollen and marvelous silk carpets, wonderful carpets depicting famous Ahalteke horses. Turkmen entrepreneurs demonstrated a variety of carpets and carpet articles with the traditional patterns and the works created through applying the new techniques, unusual colours and patterns.

The distinctive feature of the exposition was the show of the national women’s dresses. The demonstration of women’s costumes for girls, brides, married women decorated with wonderful embroidery and silver jewelry was arranged at the biggest exposition hall, which walls were decorated with giant carpets, to the sounds of national melodies.

However, the most fascinating scene was a bright panorama of the everyday life of our ancestors. A real Turkmen village with all attributes, including yurtas decorated festively on occasion of the holiday, workshops with necessary implements, and special pales for domestic animals, was set up on the area of the exhibition hall. Beautiful Ahalteke horses and a female camel with a colt pastured there admiring the visitors.

Each corner of the improvised village conveyed a living colorful picture of laborious, but, at the same time, inspired with the joy of creativity, work of carpet makers, the whole process of operations for preparations for weaving a future carpet. The visitors could see how carpet weavers chose and cleaned wool, washed and loosened fibers, twisted and wound yarn, dyed it with natural dyes produced from local plants. To create their masterpieces Turkmen carpet makers use yarn and silk threads of over 500 tints and keep over a thousand of combinations of carpet patterns and ornaments in their minds.

Wide cultural, commercial and economic relations with foreign partners play an important role in promoting the national carpet weaving and popularizing the unique qualities of handmade carpets that increases the share of Turkmen carpets in the volume of exports. For many years Turkmenistan has been cooperating successfully in this sphere with Germany, Italy, the UK, Greece and France. These countries which have the national traditions of carpet weaving highly appreciate brilliant craftsmanship of Turkmen carpet makers and show keen interest in purchasing Turkmen carpets.

Representatives of the commercial companies from these countries as well as Russia, Iran, Pakistan, the US, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkey are among the exhibition guests and participants.

The colourful panorama and festive atmosphere of the expositions helped the guests not only learn more about the unique culture of the Turkmen people, the origins of this ancient and eternal art and the thousand years’ history and rich heritage of carpet weaving of the nation, but also understand the specifics and character of unique culture and art of Turkmenistan.
