The Turkmen Carpet Day was widely celebrated in Turkmenistan on the last Sunday of May. International forums and artistic meetings, art exhibitions, concerts and competitions were organized throughout the country. The center of the festivities dedicated to this significant day was the white-marble capital of our country.
The XII Conference of the World Association of the Connoisseurs of Turkmen Handmade Carpet Weaving was held at the conference hall of the Turkmenhaly State Joint Stock Corporation. Among the members of the Association are the representatives of various scientific areas and professional interests, real enthusiasts, whose life work is to study and promote the greatest heritage of the Turkmen people recognized as a priceless monument of the national craft, its material depository and a symbol of high spirit as well as an inexhaustible source of studying the history of the Turkmen people, its influence on developing the world culture and civilization. Participants of the International exhibition entitled “Turkmen Carpet is the Standard of Beauty of Our Prosperous Fatherland” held in the Turkmen capital took part in the conference.
Famous scientists, historians, and art critics of the Sivas State University (Turkey), Voronezh State Architectural University (Russia), experts and connoisseurs of hand carpet weaving from Germany, Iran, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, specialists in the textile industry and crafts from the US and the Republic of Mauritius presented new results of the scientific searches and studies. Turkmen scientists and teachers of high schools of art, specialists of Ashgabat museums, doctoral candidates and advanced students of the National Institute for Manuscripts, Magtymguly Institute of Language and Literature of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, workers of the state carpet enterprises delivered their reports at the conference.
The solemn ceremony of awarding the best workers of the industry took place within the framework of the forum. In accordance with the Decree of the President of Turkmenistan the honorary title “Honoured Carpet Weaver of Turkmenistan”, diplomas and valuable presents were awarded to the best carpet makers on occasion of the Turkmen Carpet Day.
The final chord of the celebrations in honour of the Turkmen Carpet Day was a festive concert with participation of renowned masters of culture and arts arranged at the Ashgabat Cultural and Musical Center. The people of Ashgabat and guests of the Turkmen capital, and, of course, the main heroes of the holiday – Turkmen carpet weavers, who follow the traditions of this ancient and high art of our people, were invited to the concert.
