The premiere of the play “Chekhov's Vaudeville” was held with great success at the A. S. Pushkin State Russian Drama Theater.
Three short stories by A.P. Chekhov's "Wolf Meadows", "Bear" and "Jubilee" were included in the "Vaudeville" cycle and enjoy great popularity among theater directors. The young director Bairam Garadjaev refused the trivial decision of staging famous works. He added the author into the funny Chekhov stories.
And then, unexpectedly for the audience, the play begins with a conflict between the writer and the publishers of books and magazines. "It doesn't happen" was the verdict on his work. The writer, who is depressed by the misunderstanding of critics, is consoled by his wife Olga Leonardovna (actress Alina Andronova). Wanting to distract her husband, she sits at the piano in the corner of the room and transforms into a concertmaster, accompanying the music throughout the performance.
The big picture is best seen from a distance, but today we admire the charismatic Chekhov characters who find themselves in incredibly funny situations. "He's the writer of the future", said one of his many fans on stage. Those critics who ruined the writer's life are gone, but Chekhov's heroes live, they are relevant at all times and in demand in any society.
It is noteworthy that the transitions between vaudeville performances are filled with journalistic material taken by the director from Anton Pavlovich's diary and letters. And before us arises the image of a beloved writer, to whom we are grateful for his work, while critics for the same thing brought him a "headache."
There are many advantages in the performance. The main one is Anton Pavlovich (Mekan Odekov), exactly as we imagine him to be. This similarity was helped by makeup artists applying makeup based on Chekhov's photo. Another advantage is live singing. The final song "Blast, blast my Star" was performed by the actors. The candle, as a symbol of light, is lit by one of the spectators. In this way, the creators of the play wanted to show the vitality of Chekhov's works for our contemporaries.
The original staging of the play is presented. Regardless of where the vaudeville takes place - in a noble mansion or in a bank office - black boxes have served as a creative interior. The audience was very interested in the premiere of the play “Chekhov's Vaudeville” with many director's ideas.
The director! The actors and the audience chanted, expressing their gratitude for the interesting and unforgettable staging of the play.
– I was a little afraid to take on Chekhov, - Bairam Garadjaev admits, – I might not be able to cope. And before the applause of the audience, I was not sure of success. Now I'm calm, the audience approved of me. So, my interpretation of "Chekhov and Vaudeville" has found understanding.
