The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Declares Readiness to Cooperate with Turkmenistan in the Field of Renewable Energy

The 25th International Multidisciplinary Exhibition and Conference “White City Ashgabat – 2026” has concluded in the capital of Turkmenistan. The key themes of the forum were architectural innovation and the principles of sustainable development. The large-scale event was organized by the Ashgabat City Hyakimlik and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan with the support of the company Turkmen Energy Forum.

The venue of the anniversary forum traditionally served as a platform for discussing global environmental and energy trends. On the sidelines of the conference, Francesco La Camera, the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), shared his vision for future cooperation and presented specific proposals for joint work with the Turkmen side in an interview with a correspondent from “GA.”

Assessing the region’s climatic conditions, the head of IRENA emphasized that Turkmenistan possesses unique geographical advantages for diversifying its energy sector. The presence of more than 200 sunny days per year makes the country an ideal location for the large-scale deployment of solar power facilities.

According to the agency’s chief, the transition to renewable energy sources is driven today not only by environmental concerns but also by economic practicality.

Francesco La Camera noted that energy production based on renewable sources is a profitable means of supporting national and regional economies in the long term. Modern renewable energy technologies demonstrate greater cost stability and predictability. At the same time, the development of the clean energy sector acts as a catalyst for creating new jobs and modernizing related industries.

Our interlocutor placed special emphasis on the need for a comprehensive approach to introducing green technologies into the modernization of the urban environment. In this context, the international agency proposes the development of a specialized strategy for analytical research and expert assessments. A clearly coordinated state policy on all energy-related issues currently implemented in Turkmenistan was identified as the main condition for a successful green transition.

In this regard, the head of the international agency confirmed IRENA’s full readiness to conduct a constructive dialogue with the relevant organizations of Turkmenistan. Francesco La Camera stated that the agency is prepared to make a significant expert and technological contribution to the formation of a reliable, independent, and sustainable energy system in the country.
