SDG Reporting in the Spotlight of Specialists

On October 21–22 of this year, a meeting on SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) reporting for representatives of ministries and agencies was held at the administrative building of the State Committee of Turkmenistan on Statistics. Social, economic, environmental, legal, and land-use issues were addressed during the discussions.

The event brought together national experts—representatives of ministries and departments—who are working to define a national approach to conducting analytical activities and aligning international metadata with the country’s internal specifics.

Based on up-to-date data, they calculate an index that demonstrates an assessment of the country’s socio-economic development achievements. Technical assistance in obtaining indicators and developing data-processing mechanisms was provided by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) specialists — Rasmiya Alieva and Veronica Boero, representing the organization’s regional office and headquarters in Hungary and Italy, respectively. The purpose of the meeting also included working on questionnaires with insufficient data and identifying ways to initiate reporting on indicators that currently have incomplete information.

In addition, the specialists paid particular attention to land relations, which are among the most complex areas in jurisprudence. V. Boero noted that the percentage distribution of land assets between women and men had previously been studied by the United Nations in order to ensure the human right to self-realization without gender-based distinctions, and she touched upon a broad range of inheritance issues in this field. Her colleague R. Alieva discussed such concepts as food accounts and balances, as well as the analytical spectrum of production for individual crops.

It should be recalled that the country is currently preparing its third Voluntary National Review (VNR) of Turkmenistan, and a roadmap for strengthening SDG reporting for the period 2025–2027 has been adopted. According to data from the State Committee on Statistics, 85 percent of the SDGs have been integrated into state strategic documents and socio-economic development programs, while 82 percent are reflected on the National Internet Platform.

During the meeting, it was also noted that the country has achieved certain results in terms of attaining the SDGs and continues to actively implement comprehensive measures aimed at developing market relations, diversifying and increasing the competitiveness of the economy, introducing digital systems into all areas of public life, and deepening the socially oriented course of economic policy directed toward improving citizens’ well-being.
