US Expert Conducts Seminars on Digitization of Museum Heritage in Ashgabat

As part of bilateral cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United States in the cultural and humanitarian spheres, Dr. Daniel Weiss, a representative of the University of Virginia (USA), visited leading museums in Ashgabat.

The visit was organized under the Fulbright Specialist Program, an international exchange initiative sponsored by the US Department of State and administered by the organization World Learning to bring American experts to institutions abroad. During his visit, the American specialist is delivering a series of lectures and training seminars for staff members of museums and research institutes in Turkmenistan. The sessions are aimed at exchanging expertise and introducing modern methods of digitization and digital documentation of cultural heritage.

At the State Museum of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan, the American specialist viewed unique historical and archaeological exhibits. Dr. Daniel Weiss expressed his high regard for the collections, noting that the artifacts on display were of considerable scientific interest. According to him, the effective and professional use of maps, illustrations, and accompanying information in exhibitions significantly enhances their scholarly value.

During a meeting with museum staff and representatives of relevant government agencies, the expert delivered a lecture entitled “Information and Digitization”, illustrating the theoretical material with examples from his own professional experience. The event continued with an engaging discussion, during which participants explored pressing issues concerning the application of digital systems in restoration work.

A similar training seminar was held at the State Museum of Fine Arts of Turkmenistan. The meeting focused on the modernization of museum practices, the introduction of digital technologies, and the conversion of museum collections into electronic formats.

Addressing the participants, Dr. Daniel Weiss emphasized the strategic importance of digitizing museum collections in the modern era. He noted that this process plays a crucial role both in preserving cultural heritage for future generations and in creating reliable sources of historical information. At the conclusion of the meeting, the participants exchanged experiences and insights into the application of innovative technologies in museum practice in the United States and Turkmenistan.
