The Turkmen manat celebrates an anniversary

28 years ago on 1 November, 1993, the national money unit – manat- was put into circulation in Turkmenistan. The President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov congratulated the workers of the bank system and people of the country with this significant date in the history of the country.

Today, on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of putting into circulation of the national money unit, the scientific and practical conference was held in the Turkmen State Institute of Economy and Management with the participation of the bank workers and representatives of the state sector of economy.

Introduction of the Turkmen manat became an important step in providing of the economic development of the country. The first banknotes of the national currency of 1993 – 1995 years bore the image of the monuments of history and culture. Thus, the obverse of banknote in denominations of 1 manat on the background of the Academy of science of Turkmenistan features images of the ancient national jewelry “tumar”, on the reverse of banknote – a mausoleum of one of the ancient khorezmshahs Il-Arslan.

Throughout the history of its existence, the Turkmen manat has changed its appearance, design and color several times. Watermarks appeared on banknotes, one of them depicted an Akhal-Teke horse.

Coins and banknotes of denominated manat entered into circulation on January 1, 2009.

The new banknotes featured the images of the great historical personalities who glorified the Turkmen people and architectural monuments of the country y. The series of notes was introduced in denominations of 50-, 100-, 500-, 1,000-, 5,000 and 10,000 manat. Coins were also introduced in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 tenge (2009), 1 and 2 manat (2010).

In 2012 the Central Bank of Turkmenistan introduced the modified banknotes in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 20 manat, and in 2014 putted into circulation the modified banknotes in denominations of 1, 50 and 100 manat.

Besides, on the eve of the 2017 Asian Games, a commemorative series of banknotes dedicated to the facilities of the Ashgabat Olympic Village was issued.

In 2020 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the neutrality of Turkmenistan the new modified banknotes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 manat were introduced in the country. The color and design of the obverse of the banknotes were generally preserved, however, all the above-mentioned banknotes had emblems with the symbol of the year “Turkmenistan - Homeland of Neutrality”.

According to the established tradition, commemorative and commemorative coins dated to important dates are issued in Turkmenistan. This year, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the country's independence, the Central Bank of Turkmenistan has issued a set of numismatic novelties, including a gold and silver coins in denominations of 100 manat.
